Autonomy is independence. It implies freedom from outside influences. The concept is basic. We learn as toddlers to keep our hands to ourselves, then are immediately met with contradiction when an adult picks us up. True, sometimes we need help, but when does that stop? When should it stop? How can we ever learn to believe in our own instincts and care for ourselves if some other person or entity is always making the decisions for us? Our authors and characters must confront their parents, their children, governing bodies, and, most notably, themselves on their journeys toward trust and healing.
