Publishers love to promote a book as “perfect for book clubs!” Celebrities have been branding books since Oprah started it all 30 years ago. Bookstores have dedicated shelf space featuring local book club selections. So what exactly makes a book so well suited to a (let’s be honest, predominantly women’s) book club? Timeless themes centered around a well-paced plot. Check. Enough moral ambiguity to keep the discussion animated. Check. Relatable or sympathetic characters. Check. Manageable page count. Check. Pairs well with wine. Okay, not exactly a deal breaker, but it doesn’t hurt. Pull up a chair—your next book club pick has arrived!
