If we think of love as the greatest emotional attachment one human can have for another, its shapes and sizes are limitless. The characters in these novels exemplify love in familiar ways. That of a child for a parent, but also for the other relations who step in to raise her. The love of a mother for her children—those who have gained their independence and those who have yet to exist. And finally, a resonant and paralyzing first love that enters and exits life with all the destruction of a storm. Love makes the world go ‘round, but it can also knock us flat.
